I have been taking Propecia for sime time and I recently ran across a site that talks about a combination of 2% Minoxidil and Retin-A. Should I switch?
Propecia works at the cause of hair loss, by blocking the action of DHT on the genes that impact hair loss. Minoxidil is a drug that has a side effect: growing hair. The side effect of a noticeable growth of new hair occurs in between 3-15% of the Minoxidil taking population. Minoxidil does not block DHT, so its action is very different than Propecia. Retin-A is an acid which produces a burn to the skin. I generally look at burns negatively; why burn the skin? The burn causes increased vascularization and therefore allows a higher absorption of the Minoxidil. Retin-A also has it’s own side effects and warnings. Retin-A possibly may make the Minoxidil more effective, but at what cost to you and your skin? That is the question!

I’m glad I read this, I’ve heard about that Retin-A was once given to me when younger (Hi. Sch. and College), didn’t like, my skin is sensitive to even perfumes or fragrance in products, even low-dose Retin-A used to burn a bit. Is it OK to use 2% minox in day and 5% at night, the 5% never seems to dry in the day (makes thining more obvious : ) ). Just started Propecia, would Propecia make my skin more sensitive, can I continue using minoxidil, would it irritate more (only been on Propecia 2 days now). I’ve heard if you stop minox might cause hair to fall out before Propecia starts helping, do you of such effects?
I beg to differ. Retin A and minoxidil worked like magic for me and in my view it is by far the best treatment for alopecia I have come across. There may be some slight peeling of the skin initially but this soon disappears. I have been using it for 4 years and have no side affects.
