I am 24 year old currently on propecia for the last 8 months. While the results have been satisfactory, I am not thrilled. I have had zero side effects from the medication. I am looking into taking avodart .5 mg. I know you are not legally permitted to condone the use of it for MPB, but is it more effective than propecia? I am looking to get a little regrowth that i have not seen with propecia. Is it safe to use for MPB and is there substantial non FDA controlled testing credibility regarding regrowth? Please Advise
There are no FDA studies on Avodart related to hair regrowth, but Avodart has been studied for prostate problems and it is safe in the older population. To my knowledge, there are no good studies on Avodart with a hair loss focus either. If any readers out there are aware of such studies, please feel free to send me links to the address on the Contact page. Please follow past blog entries related to Avodart by using the search.

in regards to this post where dr. rassman asks for a link to studies on dutasteride in regards to hair growth: here is a link, i beleive these were the results from Glaxo as part of their phase II research for the fda for the use of avodart (dutasteride) and its most effective dosage levels for hair regrowth or for treatment of mph, also compared to proscar (finasteride) 5mg, various milligrams used for dutasteride with 0.5mg and 2.5mg being the most effective, and similar if not less side effects compared to finasteride 5mg, also the increased blocking of both dht1 and dht2, not just in the hair follicle, but even from the secretion of sebum from oil glands on the scalp, which apparently affect hair loss.
i was additionally wondering about 5% minoxidil used with propecia, the minoxidil seems to cause itching, i use head and shoulders for such. but i’ve read dr. rassman stating and others irritation is counterproductive for hair growth. yet doesn’t some formulations of 5% minox with retin-a work by increased blood flow (a form of inflamation or irritation)? should i stop the minoxidil? had already been using the minoxidil for months before propecia, and dr. rassman said if stop minoxidil even though on propecia may cause hair loss (of follicles adapted to minoxidil), is that itching irritation significant? and head and shoulders sufficient? sometimes i just use the minoxidil at night because it seems to weigh my hair down in day, and increase appearance of thining hair on vertex (crown). here is the link for dutasteride, you may edit this post or email me back please with a response about the minoxidil if the irritation may be affecting reqrowth and if i should discontinue the minoxidil, here is link. thanks http://www.propecia-proscar.com/avodart.htm
