Is itchy scalp a symptom of MPB? I have noticed my hair thinning for a few years now and recently started taking propecia. For the past couple of years my scalp has been noticably more itchy than it was before my hair started thinning. Also, when I scratch my scalp I notice tiny pieces of dry skin on my fingernails.I am just curious if dry, itchy scalp are associated with MPB or if the two are unrelated.
Thanks.
An itchy scalp is not a symptom of male pattern balding. You may have underlying skin problem which contribute to a dry, itchy scalp. Are you using new shampoo or new gel or chemicals on your head which could cause the dryness or itch? There are shampoos made for dry scalp which you should use with a good conditioner. You may want to visit a dermatologist to evaluate your scalp if the problem persists.

recently i decided to dye my hair and as a result my scalp became extremely itchy, and flaky, with certain areas of the scslp more dry then others. i have tryed everything from anti dandruff shampoo’s like neutrogena and nizoral, to capasal, and other medicated shampoo’s. it is very irritating and i would like some feedback.. also natural yogurt and olive oil dont seem to work.. the condition is worse when i drink alcohol which is probably due to dehydration, but this is only once weekly.. yours sincerely

Many people who suffer from itchy scalp and thinning hair as I once did, are unaware that many of the ingredients in their shampoos can be contributing to follicle damage and hair loss. I found out that ingredients like sulphates can not only cause extremely itchy scalp but also corrode and damage follicles further messing with hormones as has been proven in medical studies. I personally suffered from awful itchy scalp sores before discovering what what was causing it and started discovering the benefits of natural remedies to help restore balance to my scalp in combination with knowing which ingredients to eliminate or watch out for.
Its great to have wonderful people like Dr Rassman helping people to regain a healthy head of hair. Once you have restored your hair back to it’s “former glory” surely it makes sense to nurture it - firstly by avoiding the damaging chemicals in hair products that can damage your new hair, and secondly by using only products and remedies to nourish and protect it. I personally found lavender essential oil and ginger helped to support new hair growth along with other oils to help soothe a sore itchy scalp. I have listed natural scalp & hair oils to benefit hair and scalp at http://www.dryitchyscalpremedies.com/Itchy_Scalp_Natural_Home_Remedies.html
