Is it ok to use a pill crusher to turn Proscar (finasteride 5mgs) into a powder to take with a glass of water?
I would imagine that as long as you keep it dry and store it in a air proof container, you can crush it and take it with water. I would not put a few days supply in water, for it may lose its potency. I have no first hand knowledge on the answer to this question and came up with it on a logical basis only (I have no direct experience crushing the pill nor has any patient told me about it).

No, you can’t depend on it dissolving in water. Use alcohol. It is freely soluble in alcohol. Use something like Everclear or a very high proof vodka. Of course, even in alcohol some of the chalk-like binder won’t dissolve, but the finasteride should.
Oh, buy the way I assume you are using this as a method of dividing doses. For example, dissolve a 5 mg Proscar in 1 ml and then measure out 1 ml if you want to take 1 mg or .5 ml if you want to take .5 mg. This is the kind of think you’d want to use a syringe for. (This as rather than drinking a glass of alcohol.)
Ooops, I meant 5 mg Proscar in 5 ml of alcohol. Otherwise, the other numbers don’t work.
Rick, how about the potency of finasteride after dissolving the drug in alcohol - does it keep its qualities as DHT inhibitor?
You should not Crush Finasteride if you are a female of child bearing years and children should not take this medication or come in contact with crushed or broken Finasteride.
