I’ve been using Propecia for a year and I have recently experienced mild side effects. As a result, I searched online for information on Propecia side effects and came across a new and very significant side effect of Propecia, which I have not experienced, but that has certainly made me extremely anxious about Propecia. I found it at the following link:
AskDocWebIt comes from a woman named Lynda who claims that her husband’s sperm count has been significantly lowered since using Propecia and as a result he is not able to get impregnate her. The writer, Lynda, also mentions that she has come across other Propecia users with the same problem. This is a very serious issue that should be addressed and I would like to know your view on this issue and if you have ever heard of this side effect.
Scientific research and a woman named Lynda’s comments are two totally different things. While anecdotal reports may have some utility, they are often sources of misinformation and unfounded concerns.
I do not know if the AskDocWeb site is maintained by a medical doctor (it doesn’t indicate on their site), and I cannot comment on a woman named Lynda’s experience, because frankly, I do not know the full medical history.
One of the side effects of Propecia can be a decrease in semen volume. It should not decrease sperm count. That being said, I will inquire my contact at Merck (the makers of Propecia) about your concerns and will post any new findings here.

my husband started taking propecia about 5 yrs ago. i got pregnant about 1 1/2 yrs after he started taking it. it happened immediately. when our daughter was 1 we started trying to get pregnant again. we have been trying for 1 1/2 yrs now and just went to the urologist because i apparently am not the problem. his sperm count has decreased dramatically and is not high enough to impregnate me. he said propecia will decrease s. count. I was wondering how long it will take to get it back to normal after he quits taking it?
yes, Can you please tell me how long before his sperm count increases? My husband has been taking propecia and his sperm count is also very low. Is this reversible?
Finistride/Propecia and low sperm count.
My husband is 30, very fit and healthy but does not take any supplements other than a daily multivitamin, no other physical problems were noted in his examination by the fertility clinic and urology and does not smoke or drink or do anyother drugs. He took propecia for 5 years beginning at 25. We began trying for our first child over a year ago with no luck. All of my tests are fine and the problem is not myself. His sperm count is so low that it is considered ’severe’. He stopped the propecia over 3 months ago and re-tested and it is still severly low. He has never had an injury and does not have a vein that causes low count. There is not another reson that his sperm count is low at age 30 that we can think of other than the finistride/propecia. The fertility clinic said the drug will lower male hormones to the level of castruation and that stopping the drug will fix this problem. It has been 3 months and the half life of the propecia/finistride is 3 days and then a few weeks for the natural hormones to rise back to normal levels. His hormone tests show they are normal by blood work. The sperm count is still low as well as the volume of semen. The low volume of semen was not noticed until his third year taking propecia. We feel it is the time and duration of taking the drug that has these effects. Also, he did not have hair loss before taking the drug. He took it as a precaution in order to NOT lose his hair in the future. However, his hair was not being lost before taking the drug or while taking the drug. He was on the lowest dose for hair loss for future hairloss prevention. We have contacted the drug company who refuses to say their drug has these effects other than low semen volume. We keep finding numerous other men who have these very same issues. We are now aged 30, no children and infertile and have over 24 thousand in IVF ICSI treatments in order to get pregnant. They say using low sperm count to force a pregnancy thru IVF procedures results in possible genetic diseases and now we have to attend genetic therapy. All due to what we can only presume to be propecia/finistride. Also, there is not any infertility in either family history. Any opinions or advice would be appreciated. We are at wits end and will try anything now that we have no fertility options other than IVF ICSI. Thanks!
I have been taking Propecia (Proscar 5mg Tablet broken into 1/4’s so approx 1 - 1.25mg day) since I was about 19 years old and I am 34 now. I was taking anabolic steroids at the time and was loosing some hair. Once I stopped the anabloics the hair loss continued so I continued with the Propecia tabs using them only about 1 -2 times a week, not daily. I still have a full head of hair 15 years later but I must say that since the first month of taking this drug my semen released is very watery. I have never been able to loose the fat around my midsection. I have been trying to conceive with my wife as we’ll and am wondering myself if it has affected my sperm count which I am sure it has.

sir may i request you ,so please complete detail of finisteride dose useage, becauase ia have baldness problem that i use it but iam confuse that medical research that finisteride is good for baldness but that create other sexual;problem that way i totally confuse ,, beacause u r comment is that use of 5mg create problem off sexual probelem please define that daliy use of 5mg is dangereous ,,i use finisteride 1mg but i broke the 1mg tablets in four piece because i afriad their side effect please describe to me that what use of this dose is suitable to me that i save to my hair and my sexual habit if i married then i use it please send me complete detail so nice of you..
