Is it normal for a hair under an inch long to be noticably thinner towards the root? i see hairs that fall out that look kinda like an exclamation mark, thick at top and thin at the root. my hair is around 2cm long.
The exclamation point hair you’re describing usually points to a variety of conditions, such as allergic disorders, thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis (see Exclamation point hair). Normally hair is uniform in width.

Dr Rassman, I find your response very interesting. Because I’ve lost my hair in the same fashion - thicker towards one end and thin towrads the root while being only 1-2 inches in length. This always baffled me because all the scientific literature says that hair minitaurizes during cycle break i.e. they don’t minitaurize while in anagen phase.
Despite telling the Dermatologist that and my family history which has NO bald person whatsoever, he still said that I had mpb and he basically prescribed me finasteride?
Now after about 10 years of balding I’m NW6 @ age 26 and The only bald person in my entire family free! Not only that I’m thinning on sides and back as well which makes it almost impossible for me to get an HT.
Following picture basically shows the extent of my hairloss at age 26 (again, NO history of family baldness).

Do you think that considering the aggressiveness of my hairloss alongwith no family history makes it a very weired case? It’s almost like i’m a genetic anomally.
