Not to be rude but I can’t help but ask, before i ask a more detailed question; why Dr. Farjo, a contributing writer appears to be having serious balding problem.
Look at this another way — should a plastic surgeon make a statement by not having a boob job or a face lift? My former associate, Dr. Robert Bernstein, was asked about his balding on national TV (he has a class 6/7 balding pattern) and simply put, his hair loss does not bother him. Like Dr. Bernstein, there are many men who look handsome with a short haircut and some advanced balding pattern. Decisions on having a hair transplant reflect upon personal choices. I’ve written about this before here and here (and probably elsewhere).
I know a man with a broken nose who never had it fixed. He came to see me for a hair transplant and he said his nose was not a priority for him and the cost of a repair exceeded his budget. He obviously felt different about his hair. As to the cause, I am sure Dr. Farjo’s balding reflects genetic pattern balding like most men.
Update: See Dr Farjo’s response below (comment #5)

Balding Forum

I love your blog, but I have to point out a small mistake (i believe). I know that you said Dr. Bernstein says balding does not bother him, but I have read interviews where he indicated that he was not a good candidate for transplantation and as such would not have the procedure. However, he stated that if he were able to he would. I may be mistaken but it may be on his website. Thanks for the great blog.
Maybe that is the reason why Dr. Farjo is so involved in hair loss research because he himself is losing hair. What do they say ‘Neccessity is the mother of all invention.’
I think it depends from person to person if balding really means a lot to an individual. However, hair is the most frequent part of the face that is being noticed especially if its missing so it makes sense of having it repaired first before anything else isn’t it? Even high hairlines are very noticable and can be signs of stress or aging.
what an immature stupid question, way to answer w/ composure doc, your website is truly great.
My hair loss like most men here is genetic and gifted to me from both sides of the family. Come to think of it out of 10 direct male relatives I can think of, only 2 who did not proceed to at least Norwood pattern 7. I reached N6 when I was only 27 and my crown continued to dip after that. I suspect however what you really mean is why have I not taken any action rather than why have I lost my hair. Well, I have but Propecia was not around at the time and Minoxidil did not help. When I did train in hair surgery some 17 years ago I had hair transplants then but you have to appreciate the quality was not anywhere near what we are doing now. More importantly efficient use of the available donor hair was not comparable to today’s very high standards either. In other words, the combination of very advanced hair loss at a young age and inefficient use of my very limited donor hair means there is very little I can do to improve what I have. If you think about it, this experience very much allows me to place myself in my patients’ shoes most of the time especially the young guys with a strong family history and high expectations. It’s interesting that you refer to the hair loss as a problem. I don’t see it necessarily that way. There are plenty of bald men who are reasonably happy with themselves. It’s only a problem if it’s making you feel bad or conscious about yourself. I prefer to think I am treating the person rather than the hair loss. Back to my own hair, you could say it’s fate that I am directly involved in cell therapy research because I am typical of the person who would benefit from it. My seat is already reserved!
Dr Farjo is a doctor! He doesn’t need a full head of hair to score loads of women. I’m sure he does pretty well as it is
